Marigot, St. Martin |
Nasty, rough seas contrary to forecast.
Motored all the way. Katreena got sick, puppies were terrified.
Anchored off Marigot, cleared Customs, grabbed a bite to eat and
then slept the balance of the day. |

Rainy but warm. Explored Marigot, did
some shopping, had a pleasant dinner. Waterfront area lively but
not crowded. Since the French islands are dog-friendly, the puppies
got some great walks in. |

Hiked up to the fort overlooking Marigot.
The puppies tugged us all the way. Great pictures of the bay. |

Shopping, Katreena got a (not so great)
massage. Bought some cheap French wine, ate some local vittles
(Katreena's favorite: French onion soup). |

Gustavia, St. Barts |
Still
rough seas, but weather pretty. Cruised in Gustavia. Dozen or
so megayachts (80'-120') moored along
the quay. Mooring arrangement was a new one to us and we were a
bit tanglefooted at first. Katreena noticed boats were moored bow
and stern, and I wasn't prepared properly. We got in place fine,
after some tense moments. Cleared C&I along with paying for
the mooring. Had shoreside food and explored the shops. |

Rented a car and explored the island.
Beautiful and very European. Some of the mountainside roads were
a bit scary but the drive was worth it. Our lunch spot let us bring
the dogs in, but the beaches are forbidden. |

Fought rough seas to exit our mooring
and get fuel at a tricky commercial dock at the mouth of the harbour.
Anchored out for the night. |

Basse-Terre, St. Kitts |
Pleasant sail south to St. Kitts. Gorgeous
from the water. Mountains and sugar cane fields. And an old fort
we have to explore. Port Zante Marina was highly overrated. Concrete
dock that the shuttles for the cruise ships like to whap you against
as they roar in and out. Basseterre is gearing up for Carnival
and it's loud and seemingly hostile to folks like us. Not a dog
friendly island so the pups pottied aboard. No big deal, so did
we. |

Rented a car and explored the island.
Beautiful but the locals don't act welcoming. Visited the fort
at Brimstone Hill. Both the fort and the views are magnificent.
Had lunch at Ottley's Plantation, a converted plantation house.
Beautiful and pleasant. |

Got a peak at some of the Carnival
action and Christmas decorations but have had enough of the general
mood. Don't feel comfortable leaving the dogs unattended. |

Montserrat |
Fairly rough sail to Montserrat. Anchored
off of Rendezvous Bay. Looked pretty run down from hurricanes and
volcanoes so never went ashore. |

Deshaies, Guadeloupe |
Christmas
Eve. Cruised around the backside of Montserrat to avoid the flow
of the volcano. Weather got rougher
and seas
were turbulent. Great views of the volcano. Found safe haven in
Deshaies. Lots of cruising boats and lots of restaurants. However,
all of the restaurants closed before we could get to them and there
was nobody at C&I. |

Basseterre, Guadeloupe |
Still
nobody at C&I so pulled the
hook and headed for the capital city. Tried to get into Marina
Riviere Sens but none of the slips were big enough. So we anchored
out and cleared C&I. Had a nice dinner at a local diner. Getting
my French back slowly. |

Explored Basseterre with the puppies.
Some beautiful places and some rundown places. Can see past greatness.
Modern cars and roads, however. |

Iles des Saintes |
Sailed south for The Saints, a major
tourist destination. Lovely bay, though it took a couple of tries
to get a comfortable spot. Lots of cruising boats and a handful
of megayachts. Shoreside there are dozens of restaurants and shops,
and plenty of tourists to fill them. Met a couple of French tourists,
who were very hospitable and helpful. |

Point-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe |
Pleasant sail north to the largest
city in Guadaloupe. Mediterranean moored between dozens of cruising
boats at Marina Bas Du Fort. Great marina, though we were not equipped
for French shorepower. Lots of fine restaurants and plenty of chandleries
nearby. |

New
Year's Eve. Cooked up a nice meal aboard and calmed the puppies…firecrackers
scares the doodoo out of them. Good thing we cooked aboard as
there was a power outage
at the marina and all of the restaurants. |
