1/1/02 Wed       Point-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe Happy New Year! Bonne Annee! Rented a car and set out to explore. The roads are outstanding, the scenery spectacular. With the exception of a few rundown areas, Guadaloupe is quite modern. Drove out and visited some pretty parks. Walked the puppies around Crayfish Waterfalls. Beautiful rainforests and country drives. The west side of Guadeloupe is mountainous with lots of vegetation.
1/2/02 Thu         Left the pups at home so we could explore Carbet Waterfalls. Absolutely incredible with great walking trails. Have to visit again.
1/3/02 Fri         Explored the east side of Guadeloupe, which is flatter and more agricultural. Gorgeous rock formations and views at Pte. De Chateauz. Nice beaches and European style resorts along the south coast.
1/4/02 Sat         More dining, exploring, puppy walks and lounging.
1/5/02 Sun         More of the same hard work.
1/6/02 Mon         Checked out some of the local malls and supermarkets. As modern, if not more so, than back in the States. But the wares are European mostly, with very few American goods. Great meats and produce and plenty of provisions.
1/7/02 Tue         hecked out of the marina and anchored close to the first opening bridge to the Riviere Sallee, which separates the two sides of Guadeloupe. It will be an early opening call and challenging run to get through. 1/8/02
1/8/02 Wed 51.1 8.2 6.2 Falmouth Harbour, Antigua Bridge opened promptly at 5:00am, pitch black outside. Bridge tender informed us, first in (French and then, finally, English) that we had less than 30 minutes to reach the next bridge (one opening per day). Garmin told me that we'd have to run these dark, mangrove lined creeks at 6.5 knots to make it. Katreena took the spotlight to the bow and we hightailed it, with a small monohull following. Made it safe and sound and completed the river run just as the sun came up. Secured a dockside tie at Falmouth Harbour Marina on Antigua. Our neighbors are 80' to 150' megayachts so I doubt anyone will burglarize us. Another non-dog-friendly island so our dog walks were sneaky. C&I were not the friendliest but we cleared in fine. Expected nicer facilities due to the wealth of major yachts here. But Nelson's Dockyard is very quaint and historic, with well-preserved buildings and lovely grounds.
1/9/02 Thu         Taxied to Jolly Harbour Marina, expected a very lavish marina development. The ads have gotten ahead of themselves. Was okay, but not much happening here. Wasted most of a day. The island itself is very much like St. Thomas.
1/10/02 Fri         One last day of exploring and relaxing. 1/11/02
1/11/02 Sat 52.3 7.3 7.2 Charlestown, Nevis On to Nevis, sister of St. Kitts, in hopes it's nicer than its sibling. Anchored off of the Four Seasons Hotel, reputed to be the nicest in the Caribbean. C&I made a special trip to clear us in. Explored the Four Seasons and enjoyed a nice sunset cocktail.
1/12/02 Sun         Taxied to the Botanical Garden. Beautifully done. Owned by a doctor from Philadelphia, and he poured a lot of dough into the place. Beautiful grounds and beautiful views.
1/13/02 Mon         Relaxing morning, nice day, prepping for voyage back to St. John. Set up the spinnaker and pulled the anchor. Wind shifted as we were hoisting the kite and it twisted. In an attempt to collapse it I lost it overboard…the fun has begun. Rapidly becoming a monster sea anchor (filling with water) I cut the halyard to release the pressure and dragged the balance back on board. Stowed the damn thing and decided to deal with it later. The good news is that the windshift made a broad reach possible. Smooth sailing all the way home. Great overnight sail. 1/13/02
1/14/02 Tue 139.0 18.5 7.5 Coral Bay, St. John, USVI Home again, sun is rising. Our mooring beckons. Katreena and the pups are ready for Casaluna.
